LA's Historic Theater District

LA’s Historic Theater District

This book project looks closely at the broadly contested space of LA's Historic Theater District on Broadway Ave. The content is comprised of numerous historical documents, modern publications, with historic photos sourced from LA's Central Library archives.

By 1931 the seven blocks from Third to Olympic held the world's largest concentration of theaters. Today most theaters are churches, jewelry stores, and decaying storage units.

“To pin down the character of a place is like trying to take a snapshot of something that’s constantly moving... It’s the metabolism of the city, the ceaseless growing, and changing which is the very thing that keeps the city from dying.”

I took all the photos using both 30 mm and 80 mm film. The theater facades were shot with my Hasselblad 503CW camera.
